What is yoga nidra?

Yoga nidra is an experiencial practice - sometimes called yogic sleep - it's a guided relaxation that takes you to a place between conscious states.

It takes awareness and rotates it through different sensations – in yoga nidra, you learn to experience, to be with sensation, but not clinging to it and not avoiding it.

Theoretically, aversion and clinging lead to suffering. If you can find yourself in a state without those, then you experience no suffering. And, if you're between aversion and clinging – between the states – then you experience no suffering.

Instead, there is restoration, clarity, a state of equanimity, and balance.

Do you use visualizations when you guide your students through yoga nidra?

Yes, participants are led by a teacher through their own experiences. Yoga nidra is practiced laying down or seated, and in the quiet and dark.

What was your first experience with yoga nidra?

I was introduced by several teachers in several practices. Yoga nidra was offered at the end of asana class – it was the most complete savansana I’ve ever experienced.

How has it changed your asana practice?

I love savansana! I never miss savasana! Sometimes that’s my only practice …
