One reason why yoga is so unique from other forms of exercise is the emphasis on the spine. In a good yoga class the teacher will sequence the flow so as to work the spine in 6 different directions (flexion, extension, twists, and side bending). In sun salutes for example, the spine moves in two directions between flexion and extension. As we alternate the spine in these two directions we are setting up a hydraulic action, pumping the cerebral spinal fluid through the spine thereby bringing more “light” into the body.
In yoga, the spine is considered the conduit by which light can be generated. Surya Namaskar (Sanskrit for Sun Salutation) is considered a quick way to produce some of this light. Although there is some disagreement among authorities over the origin of sun salutes, most will contend that the practice is at least 2,500 years old. This sequence originated during Vedic times as a ritual prostration to the dawn. Because of the humble adoration of the light and insight of the self, it’s essential to practice salutations in a spirit of devotion and with your awareness turned inward toward your heart. Often teachers will advise students to do Sun Salutations as a short practice to keep yoga in their bodies.
Students can practice the sequence briskly to generate heat and cleanse the body or more moderately to create a moving meditation. Traditionally, Sun Salutations are practiced outdoors, facing east. The location of the rising sun is a symbol of the dawn of consciousness and wisdom. It is also recommended that students include a short Savasana at the end of their exercise to integrate and absorb the practice into their bodies.
Sun Salutations are called such because we are bringing the qualities of the sun into the body/mind. What does light in the body feel like? The ancient yogis talked about the ultimate goal in yoga being enlightenment. Luckily, for most of us, yoga is not an all or nothing proposition; therefore, there is a continuum on this path to embodying more light. More light in the spine may be translated as clarity of the mind, health and vitality of the body, and contentment of the soul. Most of us have probably experienced glimpses of these qualities. Wherever life takes us this summer, may we all do our sun salutes.
If there is light in the soul
There will be beauty in the person

There will be harmony in the house

There will be order in the nations

There will be peace in the world
