Exploring ayurveda: the yoga of eating

by Laura K. Burkett, HHC

Laura Burkett, HHCOne way of eating certainly isn’t right for everyone. If there were, no controversy would exist between eating animal products versus adhering to a vegan diet. Nor would there be evidence on one end, that a raw foods diet is best, but claims on the other, that cooked foods are the key to longevity.

Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, takes an entirely different approach. This ancient healing system from India emphasizes eating in accordance with your individual body type as well as the seasons of the year. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, ayurveda promotes health and disease prevention through balancing the doshas, or mind-body types.

Although ayurveda encompasses many healing modalities, the lingering question, “what should I eat?” leads many on a quest for ayurvedic dietary suggestions. Food. Is. Huge. It impacts our mood, our immunity, our energy, and our connection to ourselves and the world around us. How can we expect to be even and mindful during our asana, pranayama, and meditation practice while filling our bodies with unbalanced, de-natured foods that do not serve us?

By aligning ourselves with the core principles of ayurveda, we may find we’re sick less often, we clear up digestive concerns, skin imbalances improve, and our bodies find a comfortable weight.
