Yoga & Weight Loss: A Mindful Approach

by Laura Burkett-Holstine, HHCLaura Burkett, HHC

Would you go back to the same doctor/book/diet that prescribed something that made you feel worse every time? "But they're the expert. There must be something wrong with me!"

Ever wonder if it's not you?

We all need professional guidance at times, no doubt about it. But we've gotten into the habit of giving our power completely away to physicians, books, diets, food dogma, and habits. Can you relate to this to some degree?

Wherever you fall in the spectrum, we still get stuck wanting to know what we should be eating. And, since we are inundated with information on diets, meal plans, and the newest super-nutrients, we get caught in a cycle of basing decisions about food from intellect rather than a place of internal knowing.

And this, my friends, may lead to losing self-trust in the body.

It's time to start listening again. Your body contains a wisdom far beyond any diet or book. Starting Septmeber 28, registered yoga teacher, Melissa Gaudette, and I, are leading an 8-Week series in the beautiful space at Cascade Yoga Studio.

So where does yoga fit in with weight loss? Whether you're overeating or emotional eating, or simply fueling the body inappropriately, you'are essentially "checking-out." This disconnects us from the present moment and causes us to stop paying attention to how our body and mind feel based on what we eat and how we eat it.

Although consistent yoga practitioners will experience an increase in strength and flexibility (not to mention a good sweat in vinyasa class), practicing yoga helps develop mindfulness, the strength to be in the present moment, and the sensitivity to just be in your body. With this comes an ability to be still and listen. This can lead to finally being able to answer: "What do I really want?"

Combining the mindfulness of yoga and the practical and applicable information around nutrition, dietary theory, and food behaviors, this program is designed to integrate mind and body in a way that puts the power back in your hands. Together, we will explore various dietary theories, helping you discover what works best for your individual body. We will observe and challenge cultural and personal food paradigms.

The class format is 45-minutes of nutrition theory, lecture, and sharing and 45-minutes of asana (yoga postures), meditation, and breathwork. Weekly homework assignments in both areas will be given.
